The One Up Library is excited to announce the Master of Moments: One Up Children’s Writing Award, a contest aimed at celebrating young storytellers!
This award empowers children to share their unique stories, fosters analytical skills, and promotes discussion among young readers and writers.

(a) Personal Narrative Contest: (8-10yrs)
- Write about a moment in your life that shifted the way you see the world or yourself. How did this experience shape who you are today?
- Describe a moment when you overcame a fear. What did you learn about yourself through this experience?
- Tell us about a day when something unexpected happened that made you see your family in a new light. How did this change your relationship with them?
- Describe a time when you made a mistake and had to apologise. How did this moment change the way you think about responsibility and honesty?
(b) Personal Narrative Contest: (11-14yrs)
- Write about a moment in your life that shifted the way you see the world or yourself. How did this experience shape who you are today?
- Tell us about a moment when you had to make a difficult decision that affected others. How did this experience impact your approach to leadership and responsibility?
- Reflect on a time when you discovered a new passion or talent. How did this revelation change your goals and the way you see your future?
- Reflect on a moment when you stood up for something you believed in, even when it was difficult. How did this experience shape your values and sense of identity?

Submission Process and Guidelines
- Word Limit
- Ages 8-10: Maximum of 500 words
- Ages 11-14: Maximum of 750 words
- All entries must be the author's own work. Plagiarised or AI-generated submissions will be disqualified.
- Revisions are not permitted after the submission deadline. Only your first submission will be accepted.

A subjury of 3 members will blind score the entries.
The top 10 entries (2 per category) will be forwarded to the main jury, including Paro Anand.
Finalists will be interviewed to ensure genuine submissions and check for authenticity.

Kate Montgomery
Judge
Kate Montgomery is a global literacy education specialist. After teaching in Eastern Europe, Africa and New York City, she spent more than a decade in educational publishing, working with teams to create materials to support reading and writing development. She then spent more than a decade working at Columbia University Teachers College, leading international education initiatives. Most recently she has worked at NewGlobe leading academic plan development for literacy and numeracy development internationally, including government partnerships in Mizoram and Meghalaya. She is honored to have been a friend and supporter of OneUp for many years.
Ezette Grauf
Judge
Ezette is a former school principal, curriculum developer and teacher, with expertise in system and school reform, and the enhancement of literacy practices.
She holds degrees in Education, Linguistics, Literacy, Literature and Teacher Librarianship, with a Masters in the Teaching of Reading.
She has been responsible for large scale, long term, development of teachers in Australia, the United Arab Emirates and India.
Her work developing Literacy Coaches in India, for the Heritage Group of Schools, has been one of the most rewarding experiences of her career.
Paro Anand
Judge
Paro Anand is a Sahitya Akademi, Bal Sahitya Award winner for her book, Wild Child. She has written books for children, young adults and adults. As a performance storyteller and speaker, she has represented India all over the world. In 2019, she was awarded the Kalinga Karubaki Literary Award for Fearless Women Writers.
Abha Adams
Judge
An innovative educationist and a prolific writer on education she has spent over 35 years in Education, Media (BBC), Arts Management (Arts Council of England)) both in India and the UK. She taught at her alma mater, Lady Shri Ram College and completed a second Masters in Theatre Arts at the University of Leeds, UK.
As former Director of the Shri Ram Schools and Adviser Education to Step by Step School Noida, she has been instrumental in founding and developing two major educational institutions in the country.
Presently, she is a leading educational consultant and Vice Chair of the Ahvaan Trust, working with State Governments on Policy and Strategy to upgrade Government schools and teacher’s skills and proficiencies.
Hemali Sodhi
Judge
The founder of A Suitable Agency, Hemali Sodhi has over two decades of experience in publishing, communications and brand strategy.
Passionate about books, and with a proven expertise in communications and brand management, she has conceptualised and worked on a number of pioneering and award-winning marketing campaigns. Her focus has been on building brands – consumer-facing as well as corporate – and over the years she has worked with many renowned writers from around the world.
Hemali loves travelling, reading, and dogs. The Book of Dog, an anthology of original writings edited by her, was published in January 2022.
Vineeta Sinha
Sub-Jury
With 27 years of experience teaching English to students aged 8 to 15, I have cultivated a deep passion for fostering language skills in young learners. As a curriculum leader for junior years and the English Language Vertical lead for grades K-VIII, I have spearheaded the implementation of a robust reading and writing program designed to inspire a love of literature and enhance communication skills. My commitment to nurturing literacy is driven by the belief that strong language foundations empower students for future success.
Ruchi Mehta

Ruchi Mehta has spent nearly two decades at The Shri Ram School, Vasant Vihar, shaping young minds and creating memorable classroom experiences. As a dedicated early childhood educator, she has guided students with warmth and creativity, whether through her roles as the Key Activities Coordinator or leading the Learning Resource Centre. A lifelong learner herself, Ruchi holds a Master’s in International Business and a gold medal in Education, bringing both expertise and a love of learning to everything she does. She is passionate about storytelling and nurturing young voices.
Leslie Bartley
Sub-Jury
Leslie Bartley is an English teacher at The British School, New Delhi. Passionate about reading, especially historical fiction, she also enjoys writing, scrapbooking, and playing badminton. In her free time, she loves going for walks to unwind and look at plants.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) - Master of Moments
Can I participate in both categories?
Yes, participants can submit entries for both the Personal Narrative and Essay contests.
How will I know if I am a finalist?
Finalists will be notified by January 15th, 2025, via email.
What if I cannot attend the Awards Ceremony?
If a finalist is unable to attend, they must notify us in advance. Alternate arrangements may be discussed.
What is the interview process like?
Finalists will be interviewed to confirm the originality of their work.
The interview will include questions about the writing process and, for the essay contest, knowledge of Paro Anand’s books.
What if my submission exceeds the word limit?
Submissions exceeding the word limit (500 words for ages 8-10, and 750 words for ages 11-14) will not be considered, so ensure your work stays within the limit.
Can I make edits to my submission after sending it?
No, once submitted, entries cannot be edited. Make sure you review your work carefully before submission.
How should I format my entry?
All entries should be typed, in a legible font, and submitted as a PDF or Word document. Handwritten entries will not be accepted.
Can I submit illustrations or images along with my writing?
No, only written submissions will be accepted. Please refrain from adding images or illustrations.
Are group submissions allowed?
No, this is an individual contest. Group submissions will not be accepted.
Are there any entry fees?
No, participation in the Master of Moments: One Up Children’s Writing Award is free.
